The Buet teachers, who had been demanding removal of the vice-chancellor and the pro-vice-chancellor, finally called off their strike on Saturday on assurance from the prime minister of meeting their demands.
“We have withdrawn the strike following the prime minister’s assurance of resolving the ongoing problems and meeting our demands”, said Prof Mujibur Rahman, president of the teachers' association of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
The withdrawal decision came from a general meeting of the teachers' association Saturday morning, Rahman said.
He however said the protests of teachers' association that brought to a halt the academic activities of the public university for the last one month will continue until the VC and the pro-VC submit their resignations.
Meanwhile, VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam told The Daily Star that he was hopeful to start the academic activities from Sunday.
Earlier on Friday, a 12-member delegation of Buet Teachers' Association met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Gono Bhaban.
Voicing her worries over the deadlock at Buet since April 7, the premier assured them of looking into the anomalies and urged the agitating teachers to return to the classes for the sake of their students.
Agitating Buet teachers had been demanding the resignation of the VC and the pro-VC alleging manifold anomalies to uphold the institution's tradition of academic excellence, moral standing and non-partisan credibility.
